                                                      Principal's Message

Dear Parents:  It looks like spring is finally here, certainly, the RCHS spring sports schedule is in full swing.  The campus has been vibrant with activity:  we experienced a pre-California STAR Test and Academic Rally on Friday, April 4th. The event was highly enjoyable and successful.  That same evening students enjoyed a Sadie Hawkins Dance.

During the week of April 21st., all freshmen, sophomores and juniors will take the STAR Tests.  Testing is never the favorite experience of students.  However, given the importance of these academic tests, I ask that you encourage your child or children to give their best efforts.  River City is no longer a Program Improvement school in terms of academics because student scores on the STAR Test have improved over the last two years.  As a result, the school's Academic Performance Index has moved above 700.  It would be marvelous if we could continue this trend, and your support is greatly appreciated.

As you will read later in this communication, the school's Mock Trial Team fared extremely well at the state contests.  Under the guidance of Mr. Gerry O'Connor, the team experienced its greatest successes in the team's history.  Congratulations to all members.

Open House, as noted later on in the newsletter, takes place on April 29th, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Summer School will be held at River City beginning on June 16th.  Your students should sign up for classes they need.  We will post final dates as soon as we have confirmation.

Parents of graduating seniors should be in touch with counselors to ensure that their student is on track.

Graduation will be held at Raley Field on June  7th., beginning at 9:30 a.m.

I apologize for the short introduction, but I injured my shoulder and arm, so I am typing with one finger.

California Partnership Academy

I would like to congratulate Jennifer McAllister and Sedikeh Yusufi along with their students Felicia Castro, Harpreet Virk, Torn Saetern, Jacob Stewart, Anthony Ringor, and Armando Sutton for the excellent job they did presenting at the 2008 California Partnership Academy Conference in San Diego, CA. The crowd that attended the session enjoyed the presentation and the students input into why the Academy is such a valuable resource. Brent McClanahan of the Minnesota Vikings with his three super bowl rings attended the session and was very impressed and proud of our students.

The students presented on the water cycle and how it affected the water analysis project they had been working on at the Port of Sacramento. They went into detail with a slide show and graphs that showed their analysis during differing sampling sessions at the Port.

GREAT JOB TO EVERYONE INVOLVED

Social Science

This past weekend, River City High School's Mock Trial team, as the representative from Yolo County, was one of 32 county champions who competed in the state tournament in Riverside. Our students were a credit to our school, the city of West Sacramento, and Yolo County. (With apologies for the sports analogy, our status is somewhat akin to the little college who makes the NCAA basketball tournament and loses to the top seeds each year in the first round. We made the tournament in 2000 and were soundly defeated in all 4 rounds; in 2007 we had some close rounds but lost all 4; this year, 2008, our school defeated another county's champion for the first time.)
The team members are seniors Anisa Ahmadzai, Lindsey Davis, Fay Dennis, Mason Her (who was with us at the county competition but was unable to be with us at the state tournament), Stephanie Hertel, Yelena Ionova, Tamara Lopatin, Nazifa Hamdard, and juniors Ceanne Brunton, Jeannette Carpenter, Lacie Gunn, Bana Musallam, and Angela Sevilla. The final detailed scores will be mailed to us in the next couple of days. I believe we finished 1-3, possibly even 2-2. The state finalists were Piedmont High from Alameda County and La Reina High from Thousand Oaks, Ventura County.

And for those who might like to know more:
Round 1 on Friday matched our prosecution against a tough team from Pacific Grove HS in Monterey County. Monterey was very good and our students weren't quite as sharp as they were in the county tournament. Both the morning and afternoon rounds presented us with some real learning experience for future years, and it became clear that I missed some things in preparing our defense team for Round 2 against El Diamante HS from Visalia, Tulare County. Again, it was a very good team who gave us a rough time, and part of the blame for the poor showing should be on me, not all on the students.
But the best part of the weekend's event was that the Saturday rounds saw a great improvement. The students did not fall apart, and they re-grouped and made two of their best presentations. In Round 3, our defense team really did a fantastic job against Yosemite HS from Madera County, and I scored it as our first-ever win in a state tournament by a fairly comfortable margin (we'll see if the judges saw it that way, but I can't imagine they could have possibly scored it for Madera). Anisa Ahmadzai's opening statement and Tamara Lopatin's performance as the defendant were impeccably delivered, and Ceanne Brunton's closing argument was her best at a clutch time.

Fine Arts

Congratulations to Ms. Felicia Alleger who has been selected to be a member of the Board of Directors of the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society Foundation!  As a young musician, Ms. Alleger participated in the S.T.J.S.F. youth programs.  Ms. Alleger is looking forward to her duties as a member of the board and sees this as a great opportunity to give back to the organization and people who gave her so much.

ATTENTION STUDENTS AND PARENTS!  The Visual and Performing Arts Department is making a few changes to our course offerings.  We are offering two new classes next year,  Two Dimensional Design and Three Dimensional Design.  Two Dimensional Design represents a merger of the former Drawing and Painting and Creative Design classes.  Two Dimensional Design will introduce students to the concepts and skills necessary for the creative/effective use of two dimensional space.  This course will be open to students in grades 9-12 and is pending UC/CSU approval for college preparatory status.  Three Dimensional Design is our other new course.  Three Dimensional Design will introduce students to the concepts and skills unique to working in three dimensional space.  It will also be open to students in grades 9-12 and is pending UC/CSU approval.

We are continuing to offer Ceramics, Photography, Introduction to Printmaking, Advanced Placement Studio Art, Beginning Band, Symphonic Band, Choir, Advanced Vocal Ensemble, Jazz Band and Piano.  If you have any questions regarding new courses, please contact the Visual and Performing Art Department Chair, Mrs. Jennifer Schumacher.

Water Fluoridation in West Sacramento

The City of West Sacramento will begin adding fluoride to the drinking water supply in May 2008.  With this addition, tap water in West Sacramento will contain optimal fluoride levels as required by the Department of Public Health to offer maximum  dental health benefits.

Since 1995, California communities with over 10,000 customers have been required under Assembly Bill 733 to fluoridate their drinking water supply if funding is available.  The City of West Sacramento, with over 11,000 customers, has obtained grant funding and must proceed with the fluoridation of drinking water.

The City of West Sacramento is conducting a public information session to address customer questions and provide more information about its plans for water fluoridation.

When: Thursday, April 24, 2008 from 5-7p.m.

Where: City Hall Galleria in West Sacramento

  1110 West Capitol Avenue

Thank you for sharing this information with your students.  If you have any additional questions or concerns, please call (916) 617-4850 or visit:  www.cityofwestsacramento.org

Parent Home Link

At long last, the district has set up the Parent Home Link program for parents of 6th thru 12th grade students. This allows parents to check attendance, grades, and homework for their individual students online.  Hopefully you received a letter in the mail explaining the process.  The letter contains an ID number and a verification pass code for each student. It is very easy to set up your account  following the directions on the website:  www.wusd.k12.ca.us/homelink  .   You do need to have an email address in order to use the system.  Please add donotreply@wusd.k12.ca.us to your list of contacts in your email before you start the process.  That way your email will not block the automatic reply as SPAM.  For those of you that do not have access to a computer at home, we do have computers available in the school library that you may use.  We can also help you set up the account.

If by chance you lost or misplaced your letter, you can come into the school and ask for Joan Smith.  She can reprint the letter for you.  Please be ready to show identification for security reasons.  We will only give the information to people listed as contacts for your student.  Unfortunately we cannot give this information over the phone or by email.

You can also call 375-7800 Ext 221 if you have any questions regarding the process.

Attendance Procedures

For safety issues, we are enforcing a few new procedures in our Attendance Office.  Thank you for your help in advance.

If a student is ill, please send a note with the student explaining their absence when they return to school.  Their absence will be cleared at that time.

If a student has a medical/dental appointment, please get a note from the doctor and have the student bring it in when they return to school.  This will be required to clear the absence.

When checking a student out of school, a person listed on the emergency card must come into the Attendance Office and sign the student out.  Students will not be released otherwise.
